The Laud Troy Book

The Laud Troy Book

Anon.

early 15th century

England

Manuscript

This substantial poem about the siege of Troy survives uniquely in this manuscript. After an initial prayer, the author notes that ‘Many speken of men that romaunces rede / That were sumtyme doughti in dede’ (lines 11–12), listing great romance heroes including Bevis of Hampton, Guy of Warwick, Gawain, Richard the Lionheart, Owain, Roland, Tristan, Havelok and Horn. But, he claims, too little is known of Hector and Achilles. The manuscript’s seventeenth-century owner Archbishop Laud, Chancellor of Oxford University, has had this page ostentatiously marked with his name and the date.
