Richard the Lionheart on campaign

Richard the Lionheart on campaign

Anon.

c.1330–1340

London, England

Manuscript

This miniature appears at the head of the romance Richard Coeur de Lyon, which recounts the exploits of Richard the Lionheart at the time of the Third Crusade. The pictures shows Richard and his army attacking a city by sea. It is one of very few images that survive in the famous Auchinleck Manuscript, a large compilation probably produced in London in the 1330s. Many more of the manuscript's pictures have been lost—cut out as scrap-book trophies by a later collector.
