Alexander fragments in an Elizabethan notebook

Alexander fragments in an Elizabethan notebook

Anon.

c.1600

England

Manuscript

This notebook formed part of the collection of Thomas Greaves (1612–1676), an orientalist and reader of Arabic who studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Sections from the medieval alliterative verse romance Alexander, written in a cursive hand, are interspersed with Latin exercises in a more formal, humanistic script: here Gaius Sulpicius Apollinaris’s synopsis of the Roman dramatist Terence’s comedy Andria.
