Manuscript

The parchment wrapper that once protected this book contains a draft of part of Sir Firumbras, which has been edited and revised in the manuscript, almost certainly in person by its author. While many romances (and later readers) imagine a minstrel figure performing romances to a courtly audience, this copy of Sir Firumbras shows a literary author at work, pen in hand: an extraordinarily rare survival. The wrapper was originally used for ecclesiastical documents relating to the dioceses of Exeter and Sherborne, dated 1357 and 1377, which helps to date and localize the text.
