A lover's gift

Anon.

c.1520–1530

England

Manuscript

A delicate presentation picture shows a young man presenting a book to a lady, with the message ‘Prenes engre’ (take [this book] with pleasure). Underneath, the interlinked letters spell out ‘Maid Maria’. The romance The Earl of Toulouse that follows is based around the trials of a loving and faithful wife. After the romance, a later owner, William Fitzwilliam, has inscribed a recipe ‘to macke a good povdynge’.
