enamelled metalwork

This small and exquisite enamelled case displays scenes that might possibly derive from a romance, Sir Enyas and the Wodewose, which no longer survives in manuscript form. On this side, Enyas runs through a wodewose (wildman) who brandishes a club and heart-shaped shield. On another side, a knight on horseback appears outside a castle, and a lady reaches out from the battlements to grasp his spear. The bottom panel depicts a reclining wodewose. The case may have been designed to contain a tiny book, and hang from a belt.
