The Objects of Romance

The Objects of Romance

Medieval artists were experts in telling a story through a series of pictures—in stained glass, ivory, wood, tapestry, stone, or the pages of an illuminated manuscript. They also shared motifs across different media and genres of narrative. Each object here uses situations or imagery that romance also draws on: an assignation in a garden, a hunting expedition, an encounter with wild beasts or wild men. These formed a common visual language that could be accented in different ways, and expressed both in secular and religious environments.
